NYC Shiba Rescue
The New York City Shiba Rescue (NYCSR) is near and dear to our heart. Before Barak or SoomSoom joined our family, we spent a lot of time trying to learn as much as we could about dog ownership. To that end, we fostered a few *amazing* Shiba Inus through the NYCSR.
NOTE: We are NOT the NYCSR - we are merely avid supporters of all of the amazing work they do!! They’re an all volunteer group dedicated to contributing to the quality of life of Shiba Inus in and around the New York City metropolitan area. The NYCSR rescues Shiba Inus and Shiba Inu mixed breed dogs from dangerous environments and shelters with the goal of finding them their furever family. The NYCSR evaluates and fosters Shiba Inus in order to seek out proper adoptive families for each pup. The NYCSR also promotes responsible dog ownership by educating the public in the selection, care, and training of dogs.
Lady
Lady was the first Shiba Inu we fostered. She was found wandering alone in a building in Brooklyn. She needed extensive medical care to address a severely enlarged nipple (which eventually ruptured) and masses that were found on her foot and back. Despite these challenges, Lady was ever-the-sweetheart. She was a lover of heights - we often came home to find her sitting on our chairs or even on our desks. She was the daintiest of treat takers (probably how she earned her name), was very mellow, and loved nothing more than hanging out on the couch with the humans... except maybe tennis balls, which she was obsessed with.
Meech
Meech's family was unable to bring him along in a move, so he was taken in by the NYCSR. He was underweight when we started fostering him, so he was a bit of a food guarder. He would often snag produce bags off the counter and happily scurry about the apartment, as if he discovered some new treasure. He loved sitting between our legs and would often look back at us, waiting for us to pet him. He also had an absolutely infectious shiba smile.
Foxy
Foxy's family had to give her up, so the NYCSR took her in. We watched Foxy while her foster family was away on vacation. Foxy was dealing with an eye issue, which required daily eye cleaning and treatments... which she hated! But on the bright side, Foxy was a super snuggly shiba - if we laid down, she would scamper over and lie down pressed against you. She loved getting belly rubs and scritches behind her ears. She didn't love playing with her temporary foster brother, Barak, but was very patient with him and his antics.
The NYCSR regularly takes in a significant number of senior, injured, and special needs dogs that need more extensive veterinary treatment. Given a lack of available funds and suitable foster homes, the NYCSR is unable to take in as many pups as they’d like. If you're interested in helping, you can consider becoming a foster family or donate to the NYCSR.
